The Day – Connecticut to have cell phone proof of vaccination app

HARTFORD – Connecticut residents will soon be able to show their immunization status using a mobile phone app, though that depends on businesses, restaurants and other establishments.

Democratic Governor Ned Lamont announced on Friday that the app will be available by the end of the year. Lamont did not follow the lead of Democratic New York Governor Kathy Hochul, who reinstated a statewide mask mandate from Monday.

Lamont said the cell phone app will give restaurants and stores the tools they need to determine what restrictions to put in place, if any.

“Let them make the right decision in terms of authorizing people in their facility,” Lamont said at a press conference. “Let them have the information that if a person is not vaccinated, they must wear a mask.”

The digital passport, which Lamont said he prefers to call a digital health card since the term passport has become politicized, will use a QR code and be linked to the state’s immunization database.

Rhode Island plans to roll out a similar app, and Massachusetts is expected to follow suit, the Hartford Courant reported. New York launched a passport verification app about eight months ago.

At least a dozen states have banned proof of vaccination requirements.
